Two years ago Q and I attempted to drive the Dempster Highway through the Canadian arctic crossing through the Yukon to the most northern town on the Dempster in the North West Territories. Unfortunately, the highway had washed out and required a 3-day fix during our 9-day vacation. We drove just past Tombstone Territory Park to the washout and then had to turn around, vowing we’d return and successfully complete the trip.
This past summer we were given the opportunity to attempt the drive again. For this trip, we went at a different time of year than the last and since our initial attempt, the road had now been completed all the way to the village of Tuktoyaktuk NWT, an Inuvialuit hamlet on the Arctic ocean shore.
Since words really do no justice for the variety of landscapes and topography you pass through on the journey to the Arctic Ocean, TNN felt a photo essay would be the best representation of what we saw, albeit even photos don’t come close to the real experience.
So sit back and relax, maybe grab a snack and enjoy the show.

Hi Lily. Great to see this, some truly awesome vistas in there! Makes you appreciate why it should remain as unspoilt as possible I think. I’m guessing you didn’t stay in the water for too long? 🙂

Hello Graham, it is beautiful in the Arctic and you’re right it should remain unspoilt. Believe it or not, Q and I have now stepped in all three Oceans that border Canada and believe it or not the Atlantic was 3 x colder off the coast of Nova Scotia around the same time of year. Although having said that no we didn’t stay in the Arctic very long either as it was pretty chilly. 😉. Take care.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Up until now I thought the Canadian Rockies near Banff was the most beautiful drive, but this should be on my bucket list.

It should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s as remote as you can get in the most beautiful landscapes you’ve ever seen.

Breathtaking! I would love to see all of it in person, but for now I enjoyed the visuals you’ve provided. Thank you!

I also had no idea that you could drive that far in Canada. Loved the pictures, especially the Inuit ceremony. On my mother’s side I’m part Cherokee so this is similar to Native American ceremonies as well.

Most of the highway had been there for years but they finished to Tuktoyaktuk asr year. The festival was so much fun!

Yes they finished the last bit in 2017. Now you can drive to the Arctic! Well in Canada any ways.

Fabulous post! My chances of ever being there in person are slim … grateful for this glimpse of a part of our world very different from what I’ve experienced. I’m especially drawn to the sky shots (the light) and that determined little tree!
