While wandering, aimlessly it seems at times, Q and I are always excited when we come across something grand in nature and with a historical significance. Well, imagine our shock when our wandering through the Crowsnest Pass near the Alberta/B.C. border revealed a relic of yesteryear, still magnificent and shadowing its surroundings except for the mountains themselves.

For 25 years the Terex Titan would hold the title as the world’s largest truck. Built by the General Motors-owned Terex during the decline of the coal industry in 1973, this one and only prototype would become the lone behemoth built for hauling raw materials in the coal industry as fuel prices rocketed. Constructed for and sold to Kaiser Steel, it was used in California for a few years before being moved, piece by piece by train to the town of Sparwood, British Columbia. It worked in the service of the coal mines of Sparwood until it’s retirement in 1991. Although it had retained its title at the time of decommissioning it was only within a few short years larger trucks were being built across the globe. But at 22 ft 7 in (6.88 m) in height, the Titan is still a giant among mere mortals. And with its 12 ft tires even Lee, at 6 feet tall, could nestle quite comfortably within the wheel well.

To find the quaint little town of Sparwood nestled in the valley, travel approximately 20 km west of the Alberta border on Highway 3, the Crowsnest Highway. And have no fear of not finding the Titan, this gargantuan green truck is hard to miss.
